Prepare Your House for the Winter Ahead

Over the past several years, insurance claims from damage to flooding during cold and stormy conditions have greatly risen. 60% of current home insurance claims are the result of bad weather conditions and the effect they have on homes.  There are several precautions homeowners can take to minimize the effect the winter months can have on their homes. Trees, gutters, drains, and roofs should be checked often to make sure they are in good condition during the cold and stormy months. Also, your homeowners insurance should be checked to make sure you are adequately insured to cover any damages that may happen.

Most homeowners insurance policies provide cover in respect to flood, however, you need to specifically check your policy to insure yours does so. Also, it is important to prepare your property for the worst possible conditions this winter could bring. Built up leaves, seeds, dirt and other debris that rain or snow has brought down your roof into your gutters can lead to a blockage in the system which can lead to major problems. The good news is most of these blockages can be easily cleared, but it must be done often. It is a good idea to clear leaves and debris that have accumulated from the fall months out of gutters at the beginning of winter. This simple job will help you avoid problems down the road such as water damage, dry rot to your wood and flooding. Clearing your gutters will set your house up to be prepared for the winter ahead. It is not a difficult job, but is essential to being prepared for the winter.
